Computers
Updated: August 2018
At age 4, I started out on one of those Apple IIe computers (aka "fancy typewriters"), nowadays computers are used for everything that doesn't require pen and paper.

I currently own two machines (and multiple tablet/mobile devices). The first is an 8-core Mac Pro 2.8GHz tower (January 2008) which despite its age continues to serve as my primary workstation for all development and production. The laptop is a MacBook Pro (July 2012) used out in the field and as a dev station if needed.

Due to the evolving nature of web development, the Mac Pro contains a vast number of different operating systems, thanks to the power of virtualization (and gobs of RAM). Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan is the dominant and stable OS. Using VMWare Fusion, all flavors of Microsoft Windows (3.1, 98, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10) are installed (yes, all legit). Because of legacy Mac roots, Sheepshaver emulation adds the classic Mac OS 7.6, 8.6, and 9.0.4, just because I can. On the Linux front, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is installed just to have handy, but I don't mess around with it that much.

The laptop is always installed with the latest software (Mac OS X 10.13 High Sierra and Windows 10 via Boot Camp) with nothing vital stored on it. Therefore I can load up and experiment until the time comes to wipe clean if it starts to bog down.

When Apple's release schedule cooperates, I purchase new machines in a staggered fashion every leap year. I should have replaced the Mac Pro in 2016, but Apple is having "challenges" with releasing modern machines, so it may be on a 12-year cycle this round. The laptop is scheduled to be replaced in 2020. Mid-cycle upgrades are performed to current machines which help slow their obsolescence.
